Southampton Expelled From Play-Off Race Over Embarrassing Spying Allegations
Southampton have been taken out of the play-offs after admitting they spied on three Championship clubs during the season.
Middlesbrough, who lost to Southampton in the semi-final, have now been put back into the competition and will face Hull City for a spot in the Premier League.
The EFL accused Southampton of spying on training sessions of Oxford United and Ipswich Town, along with filming Middlesbrough while they were preparing for the first leg of the semi-final on 7 May.
An independent disciplinary panel has also docked Southampton four points for next season’s Championship.
Because of this, Southampton will miss out on the play-off final, which is often called the most valuable match in football, as the winner is guaranteed at least £110m in Premier League TV money. Meanwhile, the final will still be played on Saturday at Wembley, with the kick-off time yet to be decided.
"Southampton was first charged on Friday 8 May, with further charges issued on Sunday 17 May in relation to additional breaches during the 2025-26 season,” said the EFL statement.
"Those additional charges arose from matters identified after the initial proceedings involving Middlesbrough were initiated.” added the EFL statement.
"Southampton admitted breaches of regulations requiring clubs to act with the utmost good faith and prohibiting the observation of another club's training session within 72 hours of a scheduled match. The admitted breaches concern fixtures against Oxford United in December 2025, Ipswich Town in April 2026 and Middlesbrough in May 2026." added the EFL statement.
Shortly after the announcement, Middlesbrough also issued a statement saying they welcomed the decision that safeguards the integrity and future of the sport in England.
"We believe this sends out a clear message for the future of our game regarding sporting integrity and conduct," said the Middlesbrough statement.
"As a club, we are now focused on our game against Hull City at Wembley on Saturday. Ticket information for our supporters will be available shortly." added the statement.
Talking about Southampton, they had already sold tickets for Saturday’s match, which means fans will now get a full refund.
The club will also have to wait and see whether the Football Association takes any action against the individuals involved in the spying. It will certainly set up a strong precedent in English football that will also guide others to stay away from such practices.
