South Africa suffered a setback during their ongoing tour of Australia as off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen was reported for a suspect bowling action. The report came after the first ODI played in Cairns on August 19.
Match officials questioned the legality of the act of Subrayen, as per the objections. The match marked the ODI debut of the then 31 year old, who bowled ten overs of the game, taking the scalp of Travis Head, who was stumped attempting a strong charge down the pitch.
The off-spinner is now to be independently tested at an ICC certified testing facility. His bowling will be put through a close scrutiny after which his eligibility to continue will be reviewed.
Subrayen had already debuted in Tests earlier this year playing against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo where he caught the eye with four wickets in the first innings. His development into the ODI set up was regarded as a welcome addition to South Africa as far as spinners are concerned.
The Proteas are already short of pace strength after losing star fast bowler Kagiso Rabada to injury before the series. The absence of Rabada and the report on Subrayen has left the team with added pressure in the middle of a tough tour.
Despite these setbacks, South Africa began the ODI series strongly. They secured a convincing win in the opening match to go 1-0 up. The remaining two ODIs are scheduled in Mackay on August 22 and 24.
The incident has put focus on Subrayen’s future in the side as South Africa look to maintain momentum in the series.
