Breetzke’s Century Powers South Africa to 297/8 in 1st ODI

DURBAN: In the South Africa vs Australia 1st ODI at Kingsmead, South Africa scored a formidable 297 for 8 in 50 overs. A masterclass ODI batting anchored by a Matthew Breetzke century has propelled South Africa into a strong position.

This set up a challenging run chase for the visiting Australians on a surface that offered assistance to both disciplines.

Breetzke Tames the Australian Attack

After Australian captain Mitchell Marsh won the toss and elected to bowl under slightly overcast coastal skies, the visitors made early inroads. South Africa lost the opener Quinton de Kock for 14, followed shortly by Tony de Zorzi, who departed for a duck.

However, Matthew Breetzke stepped up with immense composure. The 27-year-old top-order batsman combined textbook orchestration with occasional flashes of raw power to rebuild the Proteas' innings. Breetzke shared a steadying partnership with skipper Temba Bavuma, who ground out a resilient 30 off 48 balls.

As the pitch flattened out, Breetzke shifted gears seamlessly. He brought up his milestone century with a crisp punch through the offside, bringing the Durban crowd to its feet. His knock of 112 off 106 deliveries was embellished with 14 elegant boundaries and two sixes, proving to be the backbone of the hosts' effort.

Jansen's Late-Innings Onslaught

When Breetzke finally ran out, Australia looked to restrict the scoring in the final powerplay. However, Marco Jansen completely disrupted those plans. The towering all-rounder unleashed a brutal counter-attack, smashing a rapid 75 off just 59 balls. 

Jansen targeted the straight boundaries with impunity, clearing the ropes four times and hitting seven fours to ensure the Proteas capitalized heavily on the death overs. Useful lower-order cameos from Ryan Rickelton (27) ensured the score marched close to the 300-run threshold.

Mixed Fortunes for the Aussie Bowlers

Australia’s bowling unit endured a mixed outing. Nathan Ellis was comfortably the standout performer, mixing up his cutters effectively to return figures of 3 for 57 from his 10 overs. Leg-spinner Adam Zampa extracted a decent turn from the surface, picking up 2 for 50, while Josh Hazlewood remained disciplined at the top, finishing with an economical 1 for 50 including two maidens. 

Mitchell Starc, however, struggled to find his radar in his closing spell, conceding 60 runs without picking up a wicket. With the pitch showing signs of slower turn and variable bounce, Australia's explosive opening pair of Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh face a steep task to hunt down the 298-run target and secure a 1-0 lead in this 3-match series.
