South Africa Women defeated Pakistan Women in a rain-marred World Cup game at Colombo. With this victory, South Africa knocked out Pakistan from the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025. This year’s campaign has remained largely poor for the green shirts, as they fail to win a single match in the tournament. On the other hand, South Africa made a superb comeback in the tournament after getting an early drubbing from England.
The match at Colombo was once again affected by rain, frustrating both teams during the first and second innings of the game. This has been the story of this year’s tournament in Colombo, as many games so far have been shortened by rain.
Batting first, South Africa demonstrated a strong performance. Though their opening plans were set back a bit by Fatima Sana, the experienced hand of Laura Wolvaardt kept on scoring runs. She steadied the South African innings when Pakistan made an early breakthrough. Her partnership with Sune Luus allowed South Africa to build a strong base, giving Pakistan tough resistance from the start.
Laura Wolvaardt’s splendid knock set the tone for South Africa in the match. She scored 90 runs off 82 balls, showcasing exceptional class and quality with the bat. Alongside her, Sune Luus and Marizanne Kapp also played splendidly. Both of these batters ensured to play with a high strike rate, negating the attack of the Pakistan bowlers.
The innings of Marizanne Kapp was especially impressive in today’s match. She uplifted the tempo when Pakistan was trying to slow down things. Her fabulous hitting dented the bowling plans of Pakistan, giving South Africa a strong push towards a big total. She scored an unbeaten 68 runs off 43 balls by smashing 6 fours and 3 sixes.
Meanwhile, Nadine de Klerk also played a valuable hand down the order. She came to the crease when South Africa needed quick runs. The batter nailed the task by taking down Pakistan bowlers aggressively. Her innings of 41 runs off 16 balls gave South Africa a much-needed push at the end. Due to this, Proteas managed to score 312 in 40 overs, as the first innings was already shortened before due to the arrival of rain.
The second innings was also affected in the same manner, giving Pakistan just 20 overs to chase a DLS-redefined target. It was basically set to 234 runs in 20 overs, something that needed a very strong batting performance from Pakistan.
When Pakistan came out to bat, they showcased a very disappointing performance with the bat. They didn’t look comfortable in the middle, as no batter was able to hit the ball through the line. The openers of Pakistan got out cheaply, as Ayabonga Khaka and Marizanne Kapp bowled superb deliveries to dismiss them early.
This double-wicket blow brought huge pressure on Pakistan, as the target was already quite high. Sidra Amin tried to build momentum in the game, but didn’t find any support from the other side. She got out after making just 13 runs, denting the Pakistani hopes further.
As the game progressed, the run rate kept on climbing, making things more difficult for the Pakistan team. The South African bowlers read the situation perfectly and put additional pressure on the batters by bowling tight spells. Due to this, Natalia Pervaiz also lost her wicket after making just 20 runs. Sidra Nawaz fought a lone battle in the middle, as Fatima and Rameen also got out without making any notable contribution.
In the end, Pakistan managed to score just 87 runs in 20 overs. They lost the match by a big margin of 150 runs, courtesy of some fine performance by Marizanne Kapp in both innings. With this loss, Pakistan has now crashed out of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 with a very disappointing overall performance.
