Sophie Devine Hails Women’s Cricket Growth After Record Hundred Auction Deal

Sophie Devine Hails Women’s Cricket Growth After Record Hundred Auction Deal

New Zealand all-rounder Sophie Devine praised the remarkable growth of women’s cricket after securing one of the biggest deals in the inaugural women’s Hundred auction. The experienced star was signed by Welsh Fire for £210,000, emerging as the Women’s Hundred auction 2026 top bid Devine, and becoming one of the most sought-after players in the competition.

Reflecting on the milestone, Devine highlighted how far the women’s game has come since the early days of her career.

"Look, certainly exceeded expectations by a fair stretch," Devine said. "The really cool thing for me is just to see where the women's game's gone - from back when I first started and you got paid 30 bucks for a weekend to some of the money that was getting thrown around."

"But more importantly, to see where the women's game's got to... it's hard to believe that it's got to this point and it's only going to continue to get better."

Reunion at Welsh Fire

Devine’s move to Welsh Fire will also reunite her with coach Michael Klinger. The pair previously worked together earlier this year when Klinger coached Gujarat Giants in the Women’s Premier League.

The reunion is expected to strengthen Welsh Fire’s lineup as the franchise builds its squad around experienced international players.

Devine Focused on New Zealand Return

After playing in several overseas T20 leagues, Sophie Devine is preparing to return for New Zealand in a five-match T20I series at home against South Africa. It will be her first international appearance since retiring from ODI cricket after last year’s World Cup.

"I think it [South Africa series] is great preparation for us," Devine said. "I think we've had an excellent build-up."

She also expressed support for new captain Amelia Kerr. "I was really impressed with the way they went about [against Zimbabwe]," Devine said. "For Melie [Kerr] to lead by example - it's probably a sign of things to come."
