Sophie Devine Advocates for Retired-Out Dismissal and More Flexibility in Women's T20s

Sophie Devine Advocates for Retired-Out Dismissal and More Flexibility in Women's T20s

Sophie Devine believes retiring out a batter will become more common in T20 cricket, despite the controversy. This tactic gained attention during the WPL when Ayushi Soni and Harleen Deol were retired out.

Devine views it as a strategic tool, stating, “It’s going to spark a fair bit of debate... for me, it’s just another strategic option.” She emphasized that such decisions are made with the team’s best interest in mind and added, “Some people will love it, some people will hate it. I think it's a great option to be able to use.”

Impact of Retired-Out on the Players

Sophie Devine acknowledges the mental impact of removing a player but sees it as a positive tactic for team success. “I hope that players who do get retired out can see it in a positive light that they want to be able to contribute to the team and they’re doing what's best for the team," she said.

Devine pointed out that the tactic doesn't always work, citing UP Warriorz's collapse after retiring Harleen Deol on 47 runs. Despite this, she remains optimistic, stating, “You’re not always going to get it right... It’s just part and parcel of cricket.”

Revisiting Fielding and Boundary Rules in Women’s Cricket

Sophie Devine has called for changes in women’s T20 cricket, advocating for five fielders outside the 30-yard circle, aligning with the men’s game. “There needs to be a serious look at the four-fielders-out rule... going in line with the men,” she stated.

Devine also suggested extending boundary lengths beyond the current 65-yard limit, especially on flatter wickets, adding, “People are clearing the ropes by a long, long way... There needs to be a shift.” She also emphasized that focusing solely on boundaries makes the game monotonous, proposing more opportunities for running twos and threes to diversify skills.
