SL vs IND 2nd Test Day 1: Padikkal Century Powers India to 300/5

SL vs IND 2nd Test Day 1: Padikkal Century Powers India to 300/5

COLOMBO: Devdutt Padikkal’s masterful century put India in the driver’s seat on Day 1 of the SL vs IND 2nd Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground. Opting to bat first after winning the toss, the visitors engineered a commanding performance to finish the opening day at 300 for 5 after 85 overs, putting Sri Lanka on the back foot in this crucial series finale.

The marquee narrative of the opening day of the SL vs IND 2nd Test Day 1 belonged to Padikkal. The elegant left-hander anchored the Indian innings with supreme poise, crafting a brilliant 117 off 193 deliveries. His knock was a clinic in patience and precise footwork, punctuated by 12 boundary hits that routinely pierced the field.

Padikkal's partnerships anchored the visitor's strategy, deflating a Sri Lankan bowling attack that struggled for consistency across the three sessions.India's top order provided a solid foundation early in the day. Dynamic opener Yashasvi Jaiswal set a positive tone with a fluent 45, laying down an aggressive marker before falling ahead of a milestone. Shubman Gill then combined with Padikkal to construct a crucial partnership, compiling a steady 50 off 108 balls.

Gill’s half-century systematically ground down the hosts' momentum, ensuring India capitalized fully on winning a favorable toss. Despite India's dominance, Sri Lanka's bowling unit enjoyed intermittent moments of inspiration, primarily spearheaded by paceman Asitha Fernando. Operating with discipline and generating subtle movement, Fernando was the standout performer for the hosts, returning impressive figures of 3 for 46 across 16 overs. He provided the vital breakthroughs that prevented India from completely running away with the game. Spinner Keshara Nuwantha claimed the prized scalp of Padikkal for 117, though it came at a costly 1 for 93 over 22 overs.

Tactical shifts also defined the team sheets for this final encounter. Sri Lanka handed a Test debut to batsman Kamil Mishara. Meanwhile, India was forced into a change as an unwell Kuldeep Yadav sat out, paving the way for debutant off-spinner Saransh Jain.

As stumps approached, veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja ensured India maintained their upper hand. Jadeja played with seasoned composure to finish the day on 43. Jadeja navigated the second new ball safely to guide India to the 300-run milestone.

Leading the two-match series 1-0 after a comprehensive 165-run win in Galle, India enters Day 2 perfectly positioned to bat Sri Lanka out of the match, while the hosts face a daunting task to break through early tomorrow morning.
