Sickness Bug Hits Norway Squad Before World Cup Quarter Final Against England
MIAMI: Norway's medical staff are working to clear a number of players for the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final against England after illness spread through the squad during the tournament. The Norway team sick concern has created uncertainty over selection just days before the knockout fixture.
Head coach Stale Solbakken said the outbreak has affected the camp but indicated the situation is moving in the right direction. Several players have experienced flu-like symptoms in recent days, forcing the coaching staff to adjust preparations while monitoring recoveries ahead of the team's final training session.
The disruption has already influenced Norway's campaign. Norwegian reports said striker Jorgen Strand Larsen was unavailable for the opening match because of illness, while defender Marcus Holmgren Pedersen missed the Round of 16 for the same reason. The recurring reports of Norway players becoming sick have raised fresh questions over the impact of the tournament schedule on the squad.
Rather than allowing the setbacks to derail their progress, Norway have continued their impressive run. Their victory over Brazil secured a place in the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time, with Erling Haaland scoring both goals in one of the competition's biggest upsets.
Solbakken suggested the combination of travel between host cities and the demands of consecutive matches could be linked to the illnesses within the group. While the squad completed recovery sessions this week, the coaching staff are expected to delay final selection decisions until they receive updated medical assessments.
England are also managing personnel issues before the tie. Jarell Quansah is suspended following his red card against Mexico, while Jordan Henderson is expected to miss the rest of the tournament with a suspected broken wrist. Reece James is also being assessed after suffering a hamstring injury.
Despite those concerns on both sides, Norway's health situation remains the dominant issue before the quarter-final, with the availability of several players still unclear as kickoff approaches.
