"Shutting Him Down Is Impossible," Iniesta Warns Spain About Messi

Spain great Andres Iniesta believes his former national side must stay committed to its own style rather than build its entire game plan around Lionel Messi when the teams meet in the World Cup 2026 final. 

Speaking before the title decider, the 2010 World Cup winner said the challenge for Spain is to control the match through possession and efficiency instead of expecting to completely neutralise Argentina's captain.

Iniesta warns Spain about Messi’s threat as Spain prepares for one of the biggest matches in the country's recent football history. Argentina arrives with Messi in outstanding form, having contributed eight goals and four assists during the tournament, making him the focal point of Spain's defensive planning.

Spain Must Focus on Its own Football

Rather than assigning a single player to mark Messi, Iniesta believes Spain's best chance lies in creating problems at the other end of the pitch. He argued that success will depend on how effectively Spain execute their own game, convert opportunities and maintain control during key phases of the final.

When asked about his former Barcelona teammate, Iniesta admitted there is no reliable blueprint for containing the Argentine playmaker.

"Shutting him down completely is impossible. It will be more about how much Spain can hurt Argentina with their own game, creating chances, and being clinical when they come along."

The former midfielder also praised Messi's influence throughout the competition.

"There are no words, or I just don't know how to describe it. The determination, conviction, and everything he does in every single game is something you just have to take your hat off to."

Confidence Over Caution

The former Spain international also stressed that mentality could prove just as important as tactics. He urged the players to approach the occasion with confidence instead of allowing the magnitude of the final to affect their performance.

"No, no, never fear. You must never play with fear."

He added that Spain's performances during the tournament have strengthened belief within the squad, saying every player understands their role regardless of the starting lineup.

Looking ahead to the final, Iniesta made it clear that the identity of the goalscorer would be irrelevant if Spain lift the trophy.

"It’s not even a dilemma, because my answer is that I don’t care who scores it. The important thing, just like back then, is that we walk away as champions. Who scores is secondary, as long as it’s the goal that wins it."
