MIRPUR: Shaheen Shah Afridi became the first Pakistan bowler to reach 100 wickets in the ICC World Test Championship during the opening day of the first Test against Bangladesh national cricket team at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Friday.
The left-arm fast bowler brought up the milestone with an early breakthrough, removing opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy. The wicket also placed him among a select group in the competition’s history, becoming the 19th bowler overall to reach the three-figure mark since the championship began.
Afridi now leads Pakistan’s wicket charts in the World Test Championship, moving ahead of several established names in the format. Shaheen Afridi's 100 WTC wickets put him clear of Noman Ali and Sajid Khan, with other contributors including Naseem Shah and Yasir Shah further down the list.
Most wickets for Pakistan in the ICC World Test Championship:
Despite Afridi’s early success, Bangladesh recovered after a slow start. The hosts were reduced to 31 for 2 before stabilising their innings through a strong middle-order effort.
Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto led the response with a century, scoring 101 from 130 deliveries. Mominul Haque remained unbeaten on 80, anchoring the innings as Bangladesh moved to 244 for 3 in 63 overs by the close of play.
The opening day saw momentum shift after the early breakthroughs, with Bangladesh regaining control through partnerships in the middle session. Pakistan’s bowlers were unable to build on Afridi’s milestone wicket as the surface offered limited assistance later in the day.
