KARACHI: Pakistan Test head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed says he remains focused on preparing the side for the upcoming Bangladesh Test series despite ongoing debate around his appointment to the role. Speaking during the national camp at the Hanif Mohammad High-Performance Centre, Sarfaraz said outside opinions would not distract him from his responsibilities with the red-ball squad.
“Former cricketers and my ex-colleagues have their own opinions. I am very positive about making the most of this new opportunity,” Sarfaraz said while addressing reporters on Wednesday.
Pakistan are preparing for a two-match Test series against Bangladesh national cricket team as part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025–27 cycle. The opening Test will begin in Dhaka on May 8, while the second match is scheduled in Sylhet from May 16.
Sarfaraz expressed confidence in the support staff working alongside him, including bowling coach Umar Gul and batting coach Asad Shafiq. He said the management group was aligned in its approach heading into the series.
“My team management, including Umar Gul, Asad Shafiq, Grant Luden and Abdul Saad, and I are very confident about coaching the team to success,” he added.
Several Pakistan players are expected to join the squad after completing their commitments in Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11. Captain Shan Masood and fast bowler Khurram Shahzad are among those due to link up with the Test camp after the tournament concludes.
Sarfaraz also spoke about Babar Azam, who recently guided Peshawar Zalmi to the PSL 11 final. The head coach said he was encouraged by the batter’s recent performances and improvements at the crease.
“It is good to see Babar scoring runs and that too with a technical comeback. He is looking solid. Yes, he has scored runs in T20s but once he joins us, we will see his role here as well,” Sarfaraz said.
Pakistan currently occupy fifth position in the World Test Championship standings with 12 points from two matches played in the current cycle.
