“I Missed My Chance to Be a Hero” Salman Mirza Laments England Defeat as Pakistan’s Semi-Final Hopes Hang by a Thread

“I Missed My Chance to Be a Hero” Salman Mirza Laments England Defeat as Pakistan’s Semi-Final Hopes Hang by a Thread

Pakistani pacer Salman Mirza has opened up on the uphill task facing his side ahead of their final Super Eight clash against Sri Lanka at the Pallekele International Stadium on Saturday, February 28.

Speaking to reporters, the left-arm speedster stressed the challenging nature of Pakistan’s path to the semi-finals in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

“It’s a critical situation as reaching the semi-final is not in our control,” Mirza admitted, acknowledging the fine margins the Green Shirts are navigating. Pakistan’s fate now hinges not only on their performance but also on other fixtures, particularly New Zealand’s match.

A win for the BlackCaps could dash Pakistan’s hopes entirely, while England’s margin of victory over the Three Lions could further complicate matters.

Mirza reflected on the team’s previous encounter with England, a defeat that has left Pakistan in a precarious position.

“We needed to win the match against England, and that defeat has given us this position,” he said. The 32-year-old recounted a personal moment of missed opportunity in the final over. “I had the chance to become a hero, but I couldn’t grab that one,” he confessed.

Despite the hurdles, Mirza remains cautiously optimistic about the semi-final, if the team qualifies.

“But if we reach the semi-final, we have the capability to do better,” he added, highlighting the team’s depth and experience under pressure. He emphasized that such moments do not come often, acknowledging the fine line between triumph and regret in high-stakes cricket.

As Pakistan prepares to face Sri Lanka, Mirza’s candid reflections underscore the intense pressure and narrow pathways that define the T20 World Cup knockout race.
