In pursuit of a tough goal of 214, India started off badly. Shubman Gill had been dismissed for a duck in the first over, and Abhishek Sharma had been dismissed on a score of 17. Soon, Captain Suryakumar Yadav also succumbed, and India was at 32 for 3 in only a little over 4 overs. Tilak Varma had struck a brilliant knock of 62, though India struggled to maintain momentum in their chase.
The middle order did not come to rescue India. Hardik Pandya (20), Jitesh Sharma (27), and Shivam Dube (1) followed one after another. South Africa had a strong bowling attack that further worsened the batting problems of India. Ottneil Baartman was particularly impressive, taking four wickets with important dismissals of Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, and Varun Chakravarthy.
Tilak Varma’s 62 off 34 balls, with 2 fours and 5 sixes, kept India in the game a little bit. His performance was characterized by timing and powerful stroke play, particularly in his dealings with the pace bowlers of South Africa. Unluckily, Varma was the final wicket to go, and his innings were completed at 62 leaving India with little time to lost their way and a huge task before them.
The bowlers of South Africa were clinical in defending 214 runs. The most outstanding bowlers were Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, and Ottneil Baartman. Ngidi got 2 wickets against 26 runs in 3.1 overs, with Jansen additionally getting 2 wickets to 25 runs in his 4-over innings. Baartman was the standout performer, as he took 4 wickets with a total of 24 runs, which was the turning point of the game.
Lutho Sipamla, though a bit costly, had figures of 2/46, which also contributed to halting the pace of India. Their pace attack provided all cylinders, and South Africa defended their partnerships with ease and limited India in building the necessary partnerships.
India’s chase of 214 ended in disappointment, as they could only muster 162 runs, losing by 51 runs. The defeat left India with plenty to work on ahead of the next game in the series.
