Annerie Dercksen Composed Knock Saves Proteas As SA Women Defeat Ban Women In Tense Battle

LONDON: Annerie Dercksen’s composed knock guided South Africa Women to a hard-fought victory at Lord's. SA women defeat Ban women in a thriller.

Chasing a modest target of 118, the Proteas survived a major scare in a tense, low-scoring Group 1 encounter, crossing the finish line with just four balls to spare to keep their ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final ambitions alive.

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh skipper Nigar Sultana won the toss and elected to bat first. The decision initially backfired as South Africa’s disciplined bowling unit tightened the screws during the Powerplay, dismantling the top order and leaving Bangladesh gasping at 23 for 2.

Veteran all-rounder Marizanne Kapp struck with her very first delivery, while left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba bowled with immense control. However, Sobhana Mostary counter-attacked intelligently, anchoring the innings with a patient 42 off 48 deliveries. Alongside Sharmin Akhter, Mostary stitched together a crucial 56-run partnership for the third wicket to rebuild the platform. After Mlaba broke the stand by castling Akhter, Nigar Sultana provided late fireworks, smashing an unbeaten 32 off just 20 balls, including a massive six, to propel Bangladesh to a competitive 117 for 5.

The Proteas' chase got off to a catastrophic start. Teenage pace prodigy Marufa Akter produced a spectacular, swinging delivery to dismiss South African captain Laura Wolvaardt for a golden duck on the very first ball of the innings. The early blow sent shockwaves through the South African dugout and shifted the momentum squarely back to the Tigresses.

With the pressure mounting on a sluggish surface, Annerie Dercksen walked in to stabilize the innings. Displaying immense maturity, Dercksen absorbed the dot balls and targeted the boundary options perfectly, top-scoring with a vital 45 off 45 deliveries. Bangladesh fought back tenaciously via spinner Nahida Akter, who registered impressive figures of 2 for 24 to trigger a middle-order collapse.

When Dercksen was eventually dismissed with the game hanging in the balance, a flurry of tight overs left South Africa needing a nervy finish in the death overs. Bangladesh missed crucial half-chances under extreme pressure, allowing the lower order to rotate the strike. Ultimately, the Proteas relied on their depth to seal the chase at 118 for 6 in 19.2 overs, securing two invaluable tournament points.
