Smith World Record and Cummins Spell Put Australia in Control in SA vs AUS 1st Test Day 3

DURBAN: A masterclass in disciplined bowling and tactical fielding has left Australia in control at the conclusion of Day 3 of the SA vs AUS 1st Test at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead. The tourists bundled South Africa out for 284 before safely navigating a tricky evening spell to finish the day at 33 for no loss, cementing a formidable 139-run overall lead.

Resuming the morning from Day 2 score 27 for 1, the Proteas faced an uphill battle to bridge the massive gap created by Matthew Renshaw’s 190 in the first innings. Early resistance flickered through Aiden Markram (37) and David Bedingham, who put together a promising 50-run partnership. Bedingham looked particularly assertive, striking nine boundaries across his top-scoring effort of 49.

However, Australia’s lethal pace battery persistently asking questions under overcast skies broke the deadlock. Mitchell Starc got the critical breakthrough by dismissing Markram, opening the floodgates for a vintage middle-order collapse.

Australian skipper Pat Cummins then turned the screws with an aggressive display of relentless short-pitched bowling. Operating at speeds north of 140kph, Cummins outfoxed South Africa's primary threats to return excellent figures of 3 for 54. Josh Hazlewood chipped in with a tidy 2 for 54, while off-spinner Nathan Lyon kept a tight leash on the run rate while picking up two crucial scalps.

The defining narrative of the afternoon, however, belonged to the impeccable Australian fielding. Steve Smith put on a clinic in the slips, intercepting multiple chances. Smith spectacularly caught Temba Bavuma off Lyon’s bowling to equal the world record of 220 Test catches by a non-wicketkeeper, before diving low to his left to secure No. 221 off Bedingham, breaking the record outright.

With the Proteas reeling at 238 for 8 at tea, a stubborn ninth-wicket counter-attack by Simon Harmer (35*) and Keshav Maharaj (34) temporarily stalled the Australian charge. Their rearguard effort pushed the total to 284, reducing the first-innings deficit to 106 runs.

Tasked with surviving a hazardous 5.4-over burst under the lights before stumps, Australia’s makeshift opening duo of Nic Maddinson and Travis Head showed exceptional technical resolve. Maddinson struck two boundaries and a maximum to finish on 17*, alongside Head on 10*, defusing the initial new-ball burst from Wiaan Mulder and Marco Jansen.

This tactical performance on SA vs AUS 1st Test Day 3 means Australia enters the championship days of the match holding all the aces. With a healthy lead, ten wickets in hand, and a deteriorating Durban pitch at their disposal, the visitors are overwhelmingly primed to dictate terms on Day 4.
