“I Am Ending a Journey,” Ronaldo Announces His Retirement from International Football After 23 Years
Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, ending a 23-year career with Portugal that brought him 234 appearances, 146 goals and three major international titles.
The 41-year-old forward confirmed his decision in an emotional farewell video shared on social media on Thursday, ahead of Portugal manager Jorge Jesus naming his squad for the November international break. His announcement comes around a month after long-time rival Lionel Messi also revealed his retirement from international football.
Ronaldo made his Portugal debut in August 2003 and went on to become the country's most-capped player and leading goalscorer. His biggest achievement came at Euro 2016, when Portugal won their first European Championship. He also helped his country secure two UEFA Nations League titles.
Dispute with Portugal Manager Preceded Retirement
Ronaldo's announcement follows a period of uncertainty surrounding his future with the national team after a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus during the previous international break.
The Al-Nassr forward reportedly left Portugal's training camp in Denmark without permission, resulting in a 30-day suspension and a €255 fine. Although Ronaldo accepted the disciplinary action, his relationship with Jesus remained strained following disagreements over comments made by the manager.
The dispute raised questions about his inclusion in Portugal's squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Denmark on 14 November and Wales on 17 November. Ronaldo had been named in the preliminary squad, while Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença also attempted to mediate between the player and manager.
However, the retirement announcement has ended speculation over his availability for the remaining international fixtures.
Ronaldo Thanks Portugal Supporters in Farewell Message
In his farewell address, Ronaldo reflected on his time with the national team and thanked his teammates, coaches, family and supporters for their contribution to his career.
He said: "I am ending a journey that began in August 2003 and changed my life forever."
The forward also acknowledged the defeats and difficult moments he experienced while representing Portugal, but said his pride in playing for his country never diminished.
Ronaldo added that representing Portugal had been the greatest achievement of his career, describing it as the country's greatest victory for him.
He concluded by confirming that although his playing career with the national team had ended, he would continue supporting Portugal.
"The number 7 shirt will remain, and my pride in wearing it will stay mine forever. Portugal will always remain within me."
Ronaldo's international retirement brings an end to one of the most decorated careers in men's international football.
