Spanish giants Real Madrid announced on Tuesday that Brazilian winger Rodrygo has sustained a major knee injury. The club confirmed the development following detailed medical assessments conducted by their in house team.
“Following the tests carried out today on our player Rodrygo by Real Madrid’s medical services, he has been diagnosed with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament and a tear of the lateral meniscus in his right leg,” the club said in an official statement.
The injury effectively rules the 25-year-old out of the FIFA World Cup 2026, dealing a significant blow to Brazil’s ambitions in the United States this summer.
Rodrygo picked up the problem during Madrid’s 1-0 home defeat against Getafe CF in La Liga on Monday. Introduced as a substitute, he remained on the pitch despite discomfort, but further examinations the following day revealed the seriousness of the damage.
The setback is particularly unfortunate given that the winger had only recently returned from a month long absence due to tendonitis, making this latest Rodrygo injury an even more heartbreaking blow for both club and country.
Later on Tuesday, Rodrygo shared an emotional message on Instagram, expressing his heartbreak.
“One of the worst days of my life, how much I always feared this injury… maybe life has been a bit cruel to me lately,” he wrote.
“I don’t know if I deserve this, but what do I have to complain about? How many wonderful things have I already experienced that I also didn’t deserve?”
He admitted that his long cherished World Cup ambition had been shattered.
“A major obstacle has arisen in my life, in my career, one that keeps me from doing what I love most for a while,” he continued.
“I’m out for the rest of the season with my club and out of the World Cup with my country, a dream which everyone knows how much it means to me. And all that’s left is for me to be strong as always.”
Brazil, five time world champions, will now miss one of their key attacking options in their bid for a sixth global title. At club level, Madrid’s depth is further tested, especially with Kylian Mbappe sidelined due to a knee sprain.
With crucial fixtures approaching, including a Champions League last 16 tie against Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid face a challenging period ahead without Rodrygo.
