Real Sociedad secured the Copa del Rey title after defeating Atletico Madrid 4-3 in a penalty shootout following a 2-2 draw after extra time in Seville on Saturday. Goalkeeper Unai Marrero played a key role in the outcome, saving two penalties to help his side claim their fourth title in the competition.
The match produced goals at both ends during regulation time. Sociedad took the lead inside the opening minute through Ander Barrenetxea, who converted a cross from Goncalo Guedes. Atletico responded midway through the first half when Ademola Lookman finished a move involving Antoine Griezmann.
Sociedad regained the lead before the break as Mikel Oyarzabal converted from the penalty spot. Atletico found a late equaliser through Julian Alvarez, whose strike forced the match into extra time.
Both teams created opportunities in extra time but were unable to find a winner. Atletico goalkeeper Juan Musso made several saves to keep his side in contention, including efforts to deny Luka Sucic and Orri Oskarsson.
The match was eventually decided in the penalty shootout. Marrero denied attempts from Alexander Sorloth and Alvarez, giving Sociedad the advantage. Although Musso saved one effort, Pablo Marin converted the decisive penalty to confirm the result.
The win marks Sociedad’s fourth Copa del Rey success and their first since their previous triumph in 2021. Unlike that occasion, which took place without spectators, this victory was witnessed by a full crowd in Seville.
Atletico captain Koke acknowledged the result and indicated the team will now shift focus to upcoming competitions.
