A normal fielding drill at Bay Oval turned into a nightmare for New Zealand when Rachin Ravindra’s injury update flashed across the team’s medical notes.
The left-hander collided heavily with the boundary board during practice, leaving him with a deep cut across his upper lip and nose. While he cleared initial concussion tests, the damage required intricate stitching. That one moment flipped everything.
Head coach Rob Walter admitted the mood dipped instantly. “We’re all really disappointed for Rachin,” he said. “But his well-being comes first. The decision was made to send him home so he can heal properly.” Fans on social media echoed the concern. The New Zealand squad now looks cursed with injuries.
Ravindra was in top form. He’s been consistently strong with the bat, and his recent scores of 69, 63, and 47 show exactly what New Zealand will miss. His strike rotation and fearless strokes at the top of the order gave the Black Caps momentum early in the innings. Now, that spark is gone.
James Neesham has been drafted in as his replacement. The allrounder last featured during the T20 tri-series in Zimbabwe, where he played a single match. He could slot into the middle order, but the balance of the side remains a puzzle. Tim Robinson is another option being considered for the top.
The series against Australia feels tougher. New Zealand were already missing Mitchell Santner, Glenn Phillips, Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson, and Kane Williamson. Add Ravindra to that list, and the challenge only grows.
The crowd will make a difference now. New Zealand fans are known to step up when their team is struggling. Whether that support will help in the series is still unclear.
For Australia, this gives them a mental advantage. For New Zealand, it’s a test of how strong their bench really is.
