Ashwin To Become England's Next Test Coach? ECB Clears Up Speculation

Social media speculation has sparked fresh debate over England's search for a new red-ball coach, but reports linking Ravichandran Ashwin with the England Test head coach position have been dismissed.

The rumours gathered pace after several unverified posts claimed the former India off-spinner had entered discussions with the England and Wales Cricket Board following Brendon McCullum's decision to step away from England's Test setup.

McCullum has ended his spell as the team's red-ball coach while continuing to oversee England's white-ball sides in One-Day Internationals and T20 Internationals. His departure has opened one of the highest-profile coaching jobs in world cricket, naturally attracting widespread attention.

Ashwin's name quickly became part of that conversation. Online claims suggested he had met ECB officials during a visit to the United States and was under consideration for the role.

Those reports, however, have failed to stand up to scrutiny.

According to multiple media reports, the meetings in the United States were linked to commercial discussions surrounding the proposed European T20 Premier League. They were unrelated to England's coaching search.

Sources familiar with the process have also indicated that the ECB has not approached Ravichandran Ashwin, nor has it held formal discussions with him regarding the England Test head coach vacancy.

The former India spinner remains active through his digital platforms, regularly analysing India's ongoing Test tour of England and offering tactical insights on the series. Despite his vast playing experience, Ashwin has yet to take up a professional coaching role since stepping away from international cricket.

Attention has instead shifted towards candidates with established coaching backgrounds.

Former England coach Andy Flower is widely regarded as the leading contender. Flower previously guided England to the top of the ICC Test rankings and is understood to be interested in returning, provided he can continue his Indian Premier League commitments with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

England Lions coach Andrew Flintoff and former Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott have also been mentioned as possible options as the ECB weighs its next appointment.

England are expected to finalise their new Test coach before the home series against Pakistan, with preparations for the next Ashes campaign already high on the agenda. For now, the speculation surrounding Ashwin appears to have little substance, while the race for England's next red-ball coach continues behind the scenes.
