Rassie van der Dussen Announces Retirement from International Cricket

South African batter Rassie van der Dussen has decided to step away from international cricket for good. He announced his retirement in a recent social media post, saying his time to represent South Africa at the international level has come to an end.

Rassie, who had a hybrid central contract with Cricket South Africa (CSA), was not re-signed for the 2026–27 season. He also didn’t feature for the Proteas for quite some time, so the decision to retire from internationals was on the cards.

Meanwhile, Rassie has announced that he will keep playing domestic and franchise cricket, and has promised to guide and coach the next generation of South African players with his valuable experiences.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Rassie van der Dussen said that representing the Proteas has been the biggest honor of his life, for which he will always be thankful to the fans and the board.

"It is with a proud heart and a profound sense of gratitude that I announce my retirement from international cricket. To wear the Proteas jersey is a feat that demands a level of resilience and dedication that both tests, and rewards you in the most incredible way. To have played for my country has been the greatest honor of my life." said Rassie van der Dussen in a social media post.

Rassie van der Dussen played 18 Tests, 71 ODIs, and 57 T20Is for South Africa from 2018 to 2025. In doing so, he ended his career with the second-highest ODI average for South Africa, just after AB de Villiers.

Rassie made his biggest mark in ODIs, scoring six hundreds and 17 fifties, including five fifties in his first nine matches in early 2019. Considering these performances, he was picked for South Africa’s ODI World Cup squad that year and stayed in the team even when de Villiers, who had previously retired, offered to play in the tournament.

Speaking about Rassie’s legacy in South African cricket, the national team director, Enoch Nkwe, said that he was an exceptional player who gave his all for South Africa at the international level.

"Rassie's legacy in the green and gold extends beyond his on-field performances. He was a strong senior voice in the change room who helped drive team culture and standards, always leading by example. He truly embodied what it meant to be a Protea. He put the team first and always supported those around him. We thank him for everything he has contributed to the badge." said Enoch Nkwe.
