Rashid Latif Backs Khawaja Nafay for Pakistan’s WC 2026 Plan

Rashid Latif Backs Khawaja Nafay for Pakistan’s WC 2026 Plan

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif rarely speaks without intent. After Pakistan’s final T20I against Sri Lanka, Latif publicly backed Khawaja Nafay as a long-term wicketkeeping option for the 2026 T20 World Cup, set to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8.

Latif’s short message on X praised the captain’s knock and carried a clear line underneath it: Nafay for WC 26. No padding. No explanation needed.

Debut Under Pressure, Not Comfort

Nafay’s first international appearance came in tough conditions at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium. Rain shortened the third T20I to 12 overs per side. The margin for error vanished. He still found his timing early.

Pakistan were chasing a steep 161 when Nafay walked in. He struck 26 off 15 balls, picking gaps, staying calm, and refusing to shrink from the moment.

Captain’s Spark, Keeper’s Signal

Pakistan skipper Salman Ali Agha produced the innings of the night for the visitors. His 45 from just 12 balls dragged Pakistan into the contest when the chase looked lost. The intent was sharp, and the execution was cleaner.

Sri Lanka, however, had already tilted the match their way. Captain Dasun Shanaka exploded with 34 off nine balls, while Wanindu Hasaranga sealed the defense with four wickets. Matheesha Pathirana added pressure with pace that never dipped.

Pakistan finished on 146 for eight, falling short by 14 runs, and the series ended at the level after one washout.

Latif’s endorsement is less about one innings and more about direction. Pakistan has searched for stability behind the stumps in T20 cricket. Nafay’s skill set, age, and temperament offer a fresh route.
