Ramiz Raja Backs Babar Captaincy With Long Term Run Demand
Former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja believes the national team should avoid another leadership change in the red-ball format, saying Ramiz Raja back babar captaincy remains the right approach as Pakistan prepare for demanding tours of the West Indies and England. His comments came days after the Pakistan Cricket Board reinstated Babar Azam as the Test captain.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Raja argued that Babar should be given enough time to establish himself in the role instead of being judged over a short spell. At the same time, he said the captain must continue delivering with the bat if he is to justify the confidence shown in him.
"Babar Azam should be given a long-term run as captain. He needs to score big runs consistently because he is the best batsman in this team. His reputation is also at stake."
The appointment marks Babar's return to Test leadership after previously leading Pakistan between 2020 and 2023. Babar replaced Shan Masood, whose captaincy tenure ended after 16 Tests. Pakistan won four matches under Masood while losing 12, with victories proving difficult across a challenging run that included defeats in Australia and at home to Bangladesh. His only series success came against England in 2024.
The PCB's decision has reignited discussion over Pakistan's direction in Test cricket, with former cricket backs Babar's captaincy becoming a major talking point ahead of a crucial period in the international calendar. Babar will now have an opportunity to begin his second spell in charge during consecutive overseas assignments.
Pakistan are scheduled to leave for the Caribbean on July 13 before playing a four-day warm-up fixture. The team will then face the West Indies in a two-Test series beginning on July 25.
The tour of the Caribbean will be followed by a three-Test series against the England cricket team. The matches are scheduled to be played at Headingley, Lord's Cricket Ground and Edgbaston Cricket Ground between August and September, giving Babar an immediate opportunity to shape Pakistan's red-ball fortunes in his return as captain.
