The rivalry of Quetta Gladiators vs Islamabad United added another chapter as Shadab Khan’s men pulled off an 8-wicket victory at the Gaddafi Stadium. Chasing a formidable 184, United’s top order dismantled the Gladiators’ bowling attack to reach the target with 10 balls to spare.
Earlier, Quetta Gladiators captain Saud Shakeel opted to bat first on a surface that offered pace but remained true for stroke-making.
Nawaz took a particular liking to clear the ropes three times. His 66 off 36 balls gave Quetta the ideal platform.
However, the introduction of Shadab Khan changed the momentum. The United skipper, often criticized for his recent lack of control, found his rhythm immediately. He deceived the dangerous Saud Shakeel (42) leg-before. Shadab finished with figures of 3 for 23, single-handedly pulling Quetta back from a projected total of over 200. A late cameo by Tom Curran (29* off 22) eventually pushed the Gladiators to 183 for 5.
Islamabad United’s response was measured yet ruthless. It was the partnership between Sameer Minhas and Shadab Khan that broke the back of the chase. Minhas, a rising talent in this year’s circuit, played with remarkable composure, picking gaps with surgical precision. He took on the spin of Abrar Ahmed, hitting him for two consecutive sixes to bring up his half-century in just 29 deliveries.
At the other end, Shadab played the aggressor. His unbeaten 69 featured four sixes. The pair put on a 128-run stand that effectively took the game away from Quetta. Sameer Minhas remained unbeaten on 82. Target is achieved with 10 balls to spare.
For Quetta, the loss highlights a recurring issue with their middle-over bowling discipline. For Islamabad, the form of their captain with both bat and ball serves as a massive boost as the tournament moves into its mid-season grind.
