UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain defeated Bayern Munich 5-4 in a thrilling semi-final first leg, making it the highest-scoring semi-final match in the competition’s history.
The big clash saw the defending champions take on the tournament favorites, and the build-up matched the hype, with the Parc des Princes coming alive through huge tifos and an impressive fire display.
Bayern Munich took the lead in the 17th minute after Willian Pacho fouled Luis Díaz inside the box. Harry Kane stepped up and calmly sent Matvéi Safónov the wrong way to score from the penalty spot.
That goal was Kane’s 54th of the season in all competitions, and it also made him the first English player to score in six straight UCL matches. Safónov later kept PSG in the game with a strong save, showcasing why he is their most-trusted keeper. At the other end, Ousmane Dembélé had a chance but fired his shot wide after breaking clear.
Dembélé was quickly saved from embarrassment by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who made a sharp run into the box, cut inside, and placed the ball into the far corner. The quality on display was outstanding, with Olise hitting the post after a strong run from the right, while Désiré Doué also came close but saw his shot deflected wide after a good dribble.
Dembélé then delivered the corner, and João Neves made a well-timed run to head the ball past Manuel Neuer. Michael Olise brought Bayern level again four minutes before half-time, weaving into the box and scoring his 20th goal of the season in all competitions.
Meanwhile, there was still late drama before the break, as Alphonso Davies was ruled to have handled the ball after a VAR check. Dembélé stepped up and sent the penalty past Neuer, scoring his 17th goal of the season.
The goals kept coming after half-time when Kvaratskhelia curled in Achraf Hakimi’s cross to reach double figures in the Champions League this season. Just two minutes later, Dembélé made it five, leaving Neuer standing still as his low shot went in off the inside of the near post.
The eighth goal of this record-breaking game came around 20 minutes after the restart. Dayot Upamecano got on the end of Joshua Kimmich’s free-kick with a light header to score only his second goal of the season.
Bayern Munich then pulled one back through Luis Díaz, who controlled Kane’s pass well and finished brilliantly to make it 5-4. Luckily, PSG tightened the defence in the end to protect their narrow lead and eventually came out on top in this thrilling first-leg UCL clash.
