PSG Hand Barcelona First Champions League Defeat in Action-Packed Contest

PSG Hand Barcelona First Champions League Defeat in Action-Packed Contest

Paris Saint-Germain extended their unbeaten run in the Champions League to 13 matches with a 4-2 win over Barcelona at the Parc des Princes. The victory kept PSG at the top of the table and handed Barcelona their first defeat of the 2026/27 season.

PSG started the match on the front foot and put Barcelona under pressure from the opening minutes. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was the first to attempt a shot on the visitors’ post, while Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue also tested the Barca goalkeeper within the first five minutes.

Barcelona, meanwhile, struggled to hold on to the ball and had lost possession 15 times before the 10th minute. PSG also faced an early setback when Dembele appeared to suffer a hamstring injury during a forward run, forcing the management to bring on Ferran Torres as his replacement.

Interestingly, Barcelona had a few good chances to take the lead, but Safonov kept PSG in the game with some remarkable close-range saves.

PSG eventually broke the deadlock just before the break when Desire Doue fired a low shot into the bottom corner, leaving Garcia with no chance. Barcelona had an opportunity to respond shortly afterwards, but Fermin Lopez failed to make the most of Pedri’s pass and could not beat Safonov in a one-on-one situation.

Barcelona then came out with a renewed strategy and looked to turn the game around in the second half. However, PSG nearly scored on a quick counter, only for Joan Garcia to keep the ball out with another fine save. The visitors eventually drew level when Xavi Espart found the space behind the PSG defence and fired past Matvey Safonov to make it 1-1 on the board.

Rodri then came close to giving Barcelona the lead with 20 minutes remaining, but his shot struck the post, which kept the scoreboard unchanged. Notably, PSG made the most of this missed chance, with Lucas Hernandez heading in from a corner to make it 2-1.

Despite this strike, Barcelona refused to give up, as Lamine Yamal restored the parity after beating Warren Zaire-Emery from a tight angle. Their joy was short-lived, though, as Vitinha fired home from the edge of the box just two minutes later to put PSG ahead once again.

Barcelona then struggled to find another response, and Fabian Ruiz settled the contest with PSG’s fourth goal late in the game. The 4-2 defeat brought Barcelona’s unbeaten run in the season to an end, while PSG maintained their perfect record to stay top of the Champions League table. The result also highlighted Barcelona’s ongoing defensive problems, with the team now having gone 18 Champions League matches without a clean sheet.
