Portugal Secure Narrow Victory Over Wales in Tough Nations League Opener

Portugal started their Nations League campaign with three points after edging past Wales 1-0 in their Group A4 meeting. The result gave Portugal a winning start, while Wales were left without a victory in any of their five matches played in 2026.

Wales looked lively in the early stages and nearly created a chance through Lewis Koumas. The Liverpool youngster got into a promising position, but the move was stopped by an offside call before his shot went wide.

Portugal gradually found their rhythm as the game went on and started dealing better with Wales’ pressure. Cristiano Ronaldo was the first Portuguese player to threaten, sending his attempt just beyond the far post from a tight angle.

The home side kept pushing forward and came close to breaking through when Nuno Mendes sent a dangerous ball into the box. Pedro Neto tried to get on the end of it at the far post, but he eventually failed to reach the delivery.

The pressure finally paid off moments later as Portugal took the lead. Joao Felix found space just outside the box and saw his shot take a small deflection before beating Danny Ward.

Portugal came close to extending their lead shortly after the break when Ronaldo was presented with a good chance inside the box. The finish came onto his weaker foot, though, and he could not make clean contact with the ball.

Wales then had a chance to respond, as Brennan Johnson went down in the penalty area, but the referee stayed with his original decision after a VAR review. The visitors also came close to finding the equalizer afterwards, but an offside flag disrupted their plans to level the score.

Portugal then kept their defence strong to see out the remaining minutes of the second half, as Wales tried repeatedly to level the score. As a result, the home side secured the victory and got their Nations League campaign off to a good start under the new coach Jorge Jesus.
