Portugal vs Norway Preview

Portugal have made a perfect start to their Nations League campaign under Jorge Jesus. They opened with a 1-0 win over Wales before defeating Norway 2-1 in Oslo and following that result with an impressive 4-2 victory against Denmark in Copenhagen.

The Portugal vs Norway preview is also dominated by the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo. The veteran forward reportedly left the national camp after a disagreement with Jesus over his role in the team. Portugal responded by producing an energetic display against Denmark, suggesting that the team can remain dangerous without their long-time captain.

Norway face a much tougher situation. Ståle Solbakken’s side began the campaign with a 3-2 win against Denmark but have since lost consecutive matches to Portugal and Wales, both by 2-1 margins.

Their defensive problems have been particularly concerning. Norway will need a much more disciplined performance in Porto if they are to prevent Portugal from extending their winning run.

Portugal vs Norway Head-to-Head

Portugal have enjoyed the stronger record in recent meetings between the two nations. Norway’s most recent victory came in the 2010 European Championship qualifiers, while Portugal have won the latest encounter and several previous meetings.

• September 27, 2026: Norway 1-2 Portugal
• May 29, 2016: Portugal 3-0 Norway
• June 4, 2011: Portugal 1-0 Norway
• September 7, 2010: Norway 1-0 Portugal
• September 10, 2003: Norway 0-1 Portugal

Portugal’s recent 2-1 success in Oslo gives them another psychological advantage heading into the Porto meeting.

Key Player Battles

Ruben Dias vs Erling Haaland

The battle between Dias and Haaland could have a major influence on Norway’s attacking threat. Haaland has been Norway’s leading scorer in the Nations League, with five goals already in the competition, including one against Portugal in Oslo.

Dias knows Haaland’s movement and finishing ability extremely well from their time together at Manchester City. His task will be to prevent the striker from receiving clean service inside dangerous areas.

Joao Felix vs Kristoffer Ajer

João Félix has become an important attacking outlet for Portugal and has scored in all three of their Nations League matches so far. His movement between the wing and central areas could cause problems for Ajer.

The Norwegian defender will have to judge when to follow Félix into advanced positions without opening gaps behind him. Portugal could exploit those spaces if Norway’s defensive line loses its shape.
