João Neves Fires Portugal Ahead Against DR Congo in World Cup Opener

Portugal took the lead just six minutes into the match when João Neves found the back of the net after being set up by Pedro Neto. The early breakthrough gave Roberto Martínez's side a 1-0 advantage and put them firmly in control of proceedings during the opening stages of the contest.

Cristiano Ronaldo captained Portugal as they looked to secure a winning start to their World Cup journey. The Portuguese side dominated possession early on and were rewarded with Neves' clinical finish.

DR Congo, appearing in their first World Cup since 1974, were forced onto the back foot after conceding early, but continued searching for a way back into the match.

At halftime, Portugal held a 1-0 lead over DR Congo thanks to João Neves' sixth-minute strike, with Group K points firmly on the line.
