Portugal Coach Roberto Martinez to Exit After World Cup Defeat

Portugal Coach Roberto Martinez to Exit After World Cup Defeat

Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez confirmed that he is stepping down after his team's 1-0 defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16. He described the loss as the end of his time in charge of the national football team.

Martinez said his contract came to an end with the completion of the latest World Cup match, which means the Portuguese Football Federation now has the chance to appoint a new manager.

The Spanish coach added that he took the job with one clear goal of winning the World Cup. Since Portugal fell short of that target, he felt there was no reason to continue in the role.

"I came to Portugal to win the World Cup and I think that, without winning it, there's no point in continuing," said Roberto Martinez while speaking to the reporters after the match.

"The board and the president now have the opportunity to choose the new manager... my contract ends today. There isn't much more to say." added Roberto Martinez.

He further added that coaching Portugal in the FIFA World Cup 2026 had been an honor for him, and he remains grateful to the board for giving this opportunity to him.

"Yes, it's my last game for the national team. I'm very proud... I've felt welcomed as just another Portuguese person, in a very warm way. It's been a pleasure, a source of pride and a responsibility." said Roberto Martinez.

Talking about Cristiano Ronaldo, Martinez said that he led the team in an exemplary manner, showcasing how much committed he was to the nation and the game of football.

"A word of thanks, because he was an exemplary captain. Not just in terms of goals, the statistics speak for themselves, but also in terms of assists.” said Roberto Martinez.

"It's his day-to-day commitment, the way he lives and breathes football. He's an example and something we must celebrate." added Roberto Martinez.

He then shed some light on the latest clash, saying the team tried their best, but were unable to win the game due to missing some fine margins.

"We showed courage in defence, we were aggressive, and we defended very well. But in the World Cup round of 16, it's the small details that matter.” said Roberto Martinez.

"The ball hitting the bar and going in or not, a chance in the 90th minute from a quick free kick. Details that make all the difference." concluded Roberto Martinez.
