PORTO Becomes LIGA PORTUGAL CHAMPIONS: Bednarek Strike Ends Four-Year Title Drought

PORTO Becomes LIGA PORTUGAL CHAMPIONS: Bednarek Strike Ends Four-Year Title Drought

FC Porto secured the Primeira Liga title after a narrow 1-0 win over Alverca at the Estádio do Dragão, confirming their position at the top of the table with two matches still to play. The result lifted Porto to 85 points, leaving Benfica and Sporting CP unable to catch up.

The decisive moment came late in the first half when Jan Bednarek found the net, giving Porto a lead they maintained through the remainder of the match. Benfica’s simultaneous 2-2 draw away at Famalicão ensured the title race was settled on the same day.

Leadership and Season Turnaround

The title marks Porto’s first league success in four seasons and comes during the presidency of André Villas-Boas, who returned to the club in an administrative role after his earlier coaching spell. Villas-Boas, once part of José Mourinho’s coaching staff, has overseen a period of rebuilding that has now delivered domestic success.

Porto’s campaign was led on the pitch by head coach Francesco Farioli, who secured the title in his first season in charge. The Italian manager’s arrival coincided with a consistent run of results that allowed Porto to open a decisive gap in the standings.

Benfica Fall Short Despite Strong Run

Benfica, managed by Mourinho, remained unbeaten for much of the league campaign but dropped key points late in the season. Their draw at Famalicão confirmed they would finish behind Porto despite maintaining one of the stronger defensive records in the competition.

The Lisbon club had appointed Mourinho earlier in the season following his departure from Fenerbahce. However, the late push was not enough to close the gap at the top.

With the title now decided, Porto will finish the season as champions. They have ended their recent drought and re-establishing themselves at the top of Portuguese football.
