Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has retained faith in the current opening pair of Usman Khawaja and Sam Konstas for the upcoming Ashes, despite ongoing debates about their form.

Ponting expressed his backing in the latest episode of The ICC Review, saying, “The batters they’ve been talking about… are Konstas and Khawaja, and then there was some talk about Cameron Green…”

Konstas, just 19, has faced criticism after a tough run in Test cricket—with an average of 16.30 across his first 10 innings. Ponting defended him, stating the Caribbean pitches have been more challenging than expected, and urged patience: “Keep your preparation simple, focus on trusted advice” rather than external noise.

In supporting the existing line-up, Ponting also acknowledged Cameron Green's gritty performance in the second innings against West Indies, which he believes may have eased concerns over Green’s suitability at No. 3.

He identified Green, Nathan McSweeney, Matt Renshaw, and Jason Sangha as the next contenders if further changes are needed.

Reflecting on Australia's tour of the West Indies, Ponting noted the batting troubles were compounded by the brutally tough pitches—Australia crossed 300 only once, while bowlers carried the team by dismissing WI for just 27 in the final Test .

With the Ashes series on the horizon and just a few domestic games left, Ponting believes selectors will likely stay the course. “That’s what they’re going to be starting with,” he added, “and you keep your fingers crossed”.
