LAHORE – In a thrilling encounter between Pindiz and Peshawar Zalmi, Peshawar pulled off a heist at the Gaddafi Stadium, chasing down a record-shattering target to spoil the Rawalpindi Pindiz’s much-anticipated HBL PSL debut.
After being put in to bat, the Rawalpindi Pindiz showed no signs of debutant nerves. Openers Yasir Khan and captain Mohammad Rizwan dismantled the Zalmi pace attack during the powerplay. Yasir Khan, the undisputed star of the first innings, played a career-defining knock of 83 off just 46 deliveries. His innings, peppered with six towering maximums, forced Zalmi’s skipper into defensive fields early on.
Rizwan provided the perfect foil with a methodical 41, ensuring the scoreboard kept ticking while Yasir took the aerial route. Following their departures, Kamran Ghulam (37*) and Daryl Mitchell (23) maintained the tempo. Despite a disciplined middle-overs spell from Sufiyan Muqeem, the Pindiz finished on a formidable 214/4, the highest score ever recorded by a franchise in its inaugural PSL fixture.
Facing a daunting required run rate of 10.75, Peshawar Zalmi’s response was clinical. Mohammad Haris set the tone with a fearless 47 off 28 balls, taking particular liking to the Pindiz’s pace spearheads. At the other end, Babar Azam played the anchor role, contributing 39 and ensuring Zalmi didn't lose clusters of wickets in the face of mounting pressure.
However, the match appeared to be slipping away when the Pindiz's Amad Butt struck twice in quick succession, removing the set batters and leaving Zalmi needing 64 runs from the final five overs.
The game turned on its head in the 17th over. Michael Bracewell (35*) kept the visitors in the hunt with clever boundary-finding, but the true game-changer was the young Abdul Samad.
Coming in at a stage where the asking rate had climbed past 14, Samad played an innings of pure audacity. He bludgeoned 33 off a mere 11 balls, including three consecutive sixes that brought the Gaddafi crowd to its feet.
His brutal assault left the Pindiz bowlers shell-shocked and exhausted the margin for error.
Yasir Khan was awarded the ‘Innings of the Match’ honors, but the night ultimately belonged to Zalmi’s collective resilience.
