The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will assume direct control of the Multan Sultans franchise for the upcoming PSL 2026 season, foregoing an immediate sale to an external buyer. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirmed in a press conference that the board would assemble a team of former cricketers and experts to manage the franchise for the 11th season before opening it to potential investors.
“As soon as the PSL ends, we will auction the franchise off, and in the next eight to ten days, we will appoint an acting head to run the franchise,” Naqvi said.
The decision comes after the departure of Sultans’ previous owner Ali Tareen, who announced last month that he was relinquishing ownership following a bitter dispute with PSL management over issues of transparency and ambition. The PCB had sent a legal notice accusing Tareen of breaching his contract, demanding a public apology and retraction. Tareen responded with a sarcastic apology video, ending with him tearing up the notice.
In the weeks following, Tareen was increasingly sidelined in franchise discussions. He was the only owner not to receive a renewal offer letter, prompting him to warn that he might pursue legal action. With Tareen’s tenure officially concluding on December 31, the PCB faced the task of managing three franchises rather than the initially planned two.
Naqvi suggested that Tareen still has a chance to re-enter the PSL ecosystem. “Unfortunately, what happened was an issue that I don't want to discuss. But we'd absolutely welcome Ali back. If he wants to buy a new team, he can bid for it by all means,” he said, highlighting Tareen’s prior contributions to Sultans.
Taking direct ownership of a PSL franchise is unprecedented, with no clear parallel in other major T20 leagues. The final structure and management team for Multan Sultans will be revealed in due course, according to Naqvi.
In addition, the PSL schedule may see minor adjustments. Originally slated to run from March 26 to May 3, the league could now begin on March 23, coinciding with Pakistan Day, a national holiday commemorating the 1940 Lahore Resolution.
Naqvi also announced that former Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram has been appointed as the PSL brand ambassador. Akram has previously served in coaching and mentorship capacities for Islamabad United and brings experience and star power to the league’s promotion.
