Pakistan vs India Hockey World Cup clash carries no pressure, says Zaker
Pakistan assistant coach Adnan Zaker believes the Green Shirts can approach their biggest World Cup fixture without the burden of expectation when they meet India at Wagener Stadium on August 19.
The Pakistan vs India hockey match has added significance for both sides, with Pakistan needing a strong result in their bid to progress further in the tournament. Zaker, however, feels the weight of expectation sits more heavily on India.
Speaking to Geo News, Zaker pointed to the resources India have put behind their hockey programme, including a 14-member coaching staff. Pakistan, he said, are still building towards that level of investment and development.
“India have made a significant investment in their hockey, while we still need time,” Zaker said. “However, the match against India will be 50-50. We have nothing to lose. The pressure will be on India.”
That makes the contest an intriguing one. India will have home support behind them, while Pakistan can take the field knowing that a strong performance against their traditional rivals could change the mood around their campaign.
Pakistan captain Abu Bakar also sees value in the team's previous meetings with India. The two sides have already faced each other twice in the Pro League, giving Pakistan plenty to assess before the World Cup encounter.
Abu Bakar said the team would look back at mistakes from those matches and use those lessons to improve their performance this time. He remains hopeful that Pakistan can produce a better showing on the biggest stage.
Striker Rana Waheed was equally confident. He acknowledged Pakistan's disappointment against Wales but insisted the squad still believes it can overcome India.
“It is true that we should have won against Wales, but that did not happen. However, we believe we can beat India,” Waheed said.
Head coach Bob John Vald-Felt expects a demanding battle against a strong Indian side. He also knows what victory could mean for Pakistan's campaign.
“If we beat India in the World Cup and qualify for the next stage, it will certainly be a very big victory,” he said.
For Pakistan, the equation is clear. The Pakistan vs India Hockey World Cup encounter is not simply another group match. It is a chance to respond after a frustrating result against Wales, correct mistakes from earlier meetings and make a statement against their biggest rivals.
