T20 World Cup 2026: Pakistan’s Semi-Final Qualification Equation After England Defeats New Zealand

T20 World Cup 2026: Pakistan’s Semi-Final Qualification Equation After England Defeats New Zealand

Pakistan is still alive in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 after England won a thriller against New Zealand in Colombo. The green shirts will now need to win the next match against Sri Lanka by a big margin to advance to the semi-finals of the mega event.

The equation for Pakistan to move to the next stage is not simple, as their NRR in the Group 2 points table is well below New Zealand’s net run rate. The green shirts need to deliver a strong performance against Sri Lanka to overcome this deficit. They need to beat the tournament hosts by at least 65 runs if they bat first in the match. Meanwhile, if Pakistan bat second, they will need to chase down the target inside 13 overs to strengthen their case for the semi-finals.

The net run-rate of Pakistan is currently standing at negative 0.461 after losing the last match against England. On the other hand, New Zealand are in a more comfortable position with three points and a strong net run rate of +1.390 registered on the table. This makes them favorites to qualify for the semi-finals if Pakistan fails to deliver a mercurial performance against Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, England have qualified for the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 with three wins in three matches in the Super Eights stage. They will now finish Group 2 at the top of the table with six points and an overall net run-rate of 1.096.
