Pakistan Lose 8 WTC Points After Slow Over Rate in Dhaka Against Bangladesh

Pakistan Lose 8 WTC Points After Slow Over Rate in Dhaka Against Bangladesh

Pakistan cricket team slipped to eighth place in the ICC World Test Championship standings after being penalised for a slow over rate in Dhaka during the opening Test against Bangladesh cricket team. The sanction came after Pakistan were found eight overs behind the required rate in the match, which ended in a 104-run defeat.

The penalty resulted in Pakistan losing eight championship points, leaving them with four points from three matches in the current WTC cycle. Their points percentage now stands at 11.11, placing them below several teams in the updated table.

Bangladesh, meanwhile, climbed to sixth position following the victory in Dhaka. Their percentage increased to 44.44 after registering their first win of the campaign, moving them ahead of England cricket team in the standings.

ICC Applies Over-Rate Sanction

The punishment was handed down by match referee Jeff Crowe under Article 2.22 of the ICC code of conduct, which relates to minimum over-rate offences. Under the playing conditions, teams lose one WTC point for every over short of the target, while players are fined five percent of their match fees per over.

Pakistan are the second side to face a points deduction in the ongoing championship cycle. England were previously penalised during the Lord’s Test against India cricket team last year, losing two points for a similar offence.

Australia Remain on Top of WTC Table

Australia continue to lead the World Test Championship standings with seven victories from eight Tests and a points percentage of 87.50. New Zealand occupy second place with 77.78, while defending champions South Africa is third with 75.00.

Sri Lanka remained fourth with 66.67, followed by India at 48.15. Pakistan’s latest penalty has further weakened their position after a difficult start to the WTC cycle.
