Hockey Mourns 1988 Olympic Hero Imran Sherwani, Dead at 63

Imran Sherwani, one of Great Britain’s most celebrated hockey figures and a hero of the unforgettable 1988 Olympic final, has died at the age of 63. His family confirmed the news, remembering him not just as a sporting great, but as the heart of their home.

His brilliance in Seoul helped deliver Great Britain’s first men’s hockey Olympic gold in 68 years, and the last time the team reached the podium at the Games. His contribution to that final remains one of the sport’s defining images.

A Career Marked by Class and Commitment

Across a distinguished international run, Sherwani earned 94 caps, 49 for England and 45 for Great Britain, and built a reputation as one of the most reliable and composed defenders of his time. He wasn’t simply a part of successful teams; he helped shape them.

Before the Olympic triumph, he played a key role in England’s silver-medal finish at the 1986 World Cup and followed it with another silver at the 1987 European Championship. Those close to the national setup often describe him as the kind of player every team wanted: steady, fearless, and utterly committed.

A Battle Faced With Courage

In December 2019, he was diagnosed with young-onset Alzheimer’s. Two years later, he made his diagnosis public, hoping that sharing his story would help others feel less alone.

His family said they will remember him not for medals or headlines, but for his warmth, humour, and kindness, qualities that touched everyone who knew him. “The world saw his achievements,” they said, “but we saw the devoted husband, father, and friend behind them.”

The Hockey World Pays Its Respects

News of Sherwani’s passing brought an outpouring of emotion across the hockey community.

EuroHockey President Marcos Hofmann called him “one of the finest players of his era,” adding that his 1988 performance would forever stand as one of the sport’s most iconic moments.

England Hockey CEO Rich Beer described Sherwani as “a true icon whose influence reached far beyond the pitch,” praising both his career and the grace with which he faced his illness.
