NZ vs IND 1st ODI: Kohli’s Half-Century and Arshdeep’s Four-Wicket Haul Seal Victory for India
AUCKLAND: Virat Kohli's masterclass and Arshdeep Singh's lethal bowling display powered India to a one-sided victory over New Zealand in the rain-affected NZ vs IND 1st ODI.
In a contest heavily disrupted by weather, India won by 5 wickets via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
Opting to field first under overcast skies, India’s young bowling brigade immediately extracted venom from the Auckland surface. The hosts struggled to build partnerships against a disciplined attack. Arshdeep Singh's four-wicket haul (4/70) dismantled the Kiwi top and middle order, consistently breaking formatting partnerships just as they looked to accelerate.
Tim Seifert top-scored for the Black Caps with 38, but it was a late lower-order cameo from Blair Tickner, who smashed 34 runs, that dragged New Zealand to a fighting total of 185 all out in 40.2 overs. Anshul Kamboj was exceptionally economical, picking up 2/22 in his 10 overs, while Gurnoor Brar chipped in with an impressive 3/44.
With rain forcing multiple interruptions, India's target was officially revised to 143 runs from 32 overs under the DLS system. The chase began on a disastrous note for the Men in Blue as seasoned opener Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a duck in the very first over.
However, the early setback only set the stage for another chasing masterclass. Virat's half-century completely snatched the momentum back from the hosts. The legendary batsman unleashed a flurry of boundaries, anchoring the innings with a spectacular 74 off just 51 balls. His aggressive knock, studded with 13 boundaries and a six, put the Kiwi bowlers completely on the back foot. Skipper Shubman Gill played the perfect foil at the other end, rotating strike efficiently to accumulate a steady 37.
By the time Kohli fell, the job was effectively done. Naman Dhir held his nerve to hit the winning runs, guiding India home comfortably in just 22.4 overs. The clinical performance seals a perfect start to the tour for the visitors, leaving New Zealand with plenty of questions to answer ahead of the second encounter.
