Haaland's Late Strike Against Ivory Coast Sends Norway into Round of 16

Haaland's Late Strike Against Ivory Coast Sends Norway into Round of 16

Norway beat Ivory Coast 2-1 to claim their first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout victory after failing to win in their previous two attempts. Ivory Coast showed plenty of fight in their first appearance beyond the group stage, but Erling Braut Haaland's late goal ended their hopes of reaching the next round.

Norway made a bright start, with Haaland getting an early chance, but his header was comfortably blocked. Soon after, a slightly misplaced pass from Martin Odegaard stopped the striker from getting another clear opportunity.

Ivory Coast gradually settled into the game and started creating chances of their own. Ghislain Konan fired into the side netting from a tight angle, while Nicolas Pepe missed a good opportunity after being picked out at the far post by Yan Diomande.

As the first half looked set to end without a goal, Norway found the breakthrough. Antonio Nusa made a great move from the left and curled a superb shot past Yahia Fofana to give the Vikings the lead.

Norway's opening goal brought the match to life, and Stale Solbakken's side nearly doubled their lead before halftime. Haaland looked certain to score, but another timely block denied him. Moments later, he came close again but could not reach Alexander Sorloth's flick from the resulting corner.

The second half produced chances for both teams. Sander Berge almost scored when a dangerous ball into the box bounced kindly into Yahia Fofana's hands. Torbjorn Heggem came even closer, but substitute Amad Diallo cleared his powerful header off the goal line.

Diallo then changed the game at the other end. After starting on the bench, the Manchester United forward weaved past the Norway defence and finished brilliantly to score the equaliser, producing one of the best goals of the tournament so far.

However, Norway had the final say. Just when Ivory Coast looked ready to take control, Haaland was in the right place to meet Patrick Berg's square pass and calmly tap home the winner.

Norway will now face Carlo Ancelotti's Brazil in the next round, with a possible quarter-final meeting against England waiting for the winners.
