Brazilian football star Neymar has publicly apologized after an altercation with his 18-year-old teammate, Robinho Jr., during a training session at Santos FC. The incident, which escalated following a heated exchange between the two, has since been resolved, with both players moving forward after Neymar expressed regret over his actions.
The incident occurred after Santos FC's 1-1 draw with Deportivo Recoleta in the Copa Sudamericana on Wednesday. Neymar revealed that the situation escalated during a training session when Robinho Jr. dribbled past him, causing a heated reaction from the seasoned player.
Neymar admitted to reporters that he lost his temper during the session and overreacted in the heat of the moment. He confessed that his physical reaction slapping the younger player was unnecessary, explaining that it stemmed from frustration.
“If you want an apology in front of the press, here it is. I had already apologized to him and to his family. I crossed the line,” Neymar told the press, reflecting on the moment that led to the public fallout. Neymar emphasized that he had immediately apologized to Robinho Jr. and the team in the locker room after the altercation.
Robinho Jr. acknowledged that the slap took place during a tense moment but made it clear that there were no lingering issues. “Everything is resolved,” he said. “It’s a situation that upset me because he’s been my idol since childhood. I talked about it with my parents and I accept his apology.”
Robinho Jr. even reversed his decision to end his contract with Santos, confirming that he would remain with the club until 2031. The reconciliation between the two players was displayed on the field after Neymar scored the opening goal in the 41st minute. He ran straight to Robinho Jr. to share a celebratory hug, signaling the resolution of the conflict.
Neymar’s apology and the subsequent act of reconciliation have quelled the controversy surrounding the incident. Despite the emotional moment, both players have made peace and are focused on their shared goal at Santos.
As Neymar looks ahead, he remains hopeful of making the Brazilian national team for the 2026 World Cup, after not having played for his country since October 2023. Head coach Carlo Ancelotti will announce the final squad on May 18.
