Newcastle United have just confirmed the signing of Malick Thiaw, the 24 year old German defender from AC Milan. He is the third big signing for the club this summer window.

The transfer fee is understood to be around £34.6 million, though with bonuses and add-ons, the figure could climb to roughly €40 million. Both clubs signed off on the deal earlier this week, and Thiaw will wear the No. 12 shirt for the Magpies.

Thiaw spent the past three seasons in Italy, making 85 appearances in all competitions for Milan. In that time, he helped the club lift the Supercoppa Italiana and even grabbed a memorable goal in the Champions League against Real Madrid.

Capped three times by Germany, Thiaw is known for his ability to slot into several defensive roles. While naturally a centre-back, he can also fill in at right-back or sit in front of the defence as a holding midfielder—qualities that will give Eddie Howe greater flexibility in his squad.

Speaking about the move, Howe said: “We’re really pleased to have Malick on board. He’s a player I’ve admired for a long time and somebody who will add real quality to our defensive options.”

Thanks to his youthful age, experience in one of the top teams in the league, and adaptability, Thiaw will be playing a key role as Newcastle prepare for another season in the Champions League. Newcastle want to improve the core squad and this signing is a great way for them to stay ahead of the competition in the long run.
