New Zealand vs West Indies 1st ODI: Mitchell 65 Lifts Black Caps to 267 in First Innings
New Zealand have scored a decent total of 267 against West Indies in the first innings, courtesy of a fighting knock by Daryl Mitchell. He held his composure when the wickets were falling at the other end, making sure to take the innings deep and score a good total. Meanwhile, West Indies also executed their plans well to stop the NZ scoring rate, otherwise the visitors were aiming to go beyond 300.
Batting first, New Zealand started confidently by countering the home attack. Both Will Young and Henry Nicholls built a great partnership of 80 runs, before the latter got out in the 16th over for 27 runs.
West Indies then applied pressure and squeezed the scoring rate, as the Black Caps failed to lift their momentum afterwards. They built little partnerships during the middle overs, but kept losing wickets as well.
Daryl Mitchell remained their star performer by scoring a fighting 65, which made sure to keep NZ in the contest when WI were applying the pressure. Due to his gritty knock, New Zealand have scored 267 at the end of the first innings, which is considered an average total at the Providence Stadium. The Black Caps will now look to defend this score in the second innings, whereas WI will aim to chase this down by starting confidently in the Powerplay.
