From the opening whistle, New Zealand asserted their dominance by establishing a suffocating press that rattled the Irish defense. Gregory Williams sparked the Irish side to life, breaking the deadlock at 37th minute to make it 4–1. Merely forty seconds later, Lee Cole gave the Green Machine genuine belief, firing home a penalty corner. With the score suddenly at 4–2, Ireland pushed forward aggressively, but New Zealand's defensive unit managed to weather the storm. 

Just as the third quarter looked to close with Irish momentum, Sam Lane delivered a crushing blow to Ireland’s comeback hopes, scoring his second goal of the match at 45:45 to halt the bleeding and push New Zealand's lead back to three goals.

The final quarter was a game of game-management for the Black Sticks. Despite physical play from both sides, New Zealand kept their composure. Finn Ward put the result beyond any doubt, slotting home New Zealand's sixth goal of the afternoon. Ireland refused to yield, fighting until the final buzzer. In the literal last second of the match, Jeremy Duncan scored a consolation goal, bringing the final scoreline to 6–3.
