Netherlands Crush Sweden 5-1 in World Cup Clash
Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo scored twice to give Netherlands a commanding win over Sweden in the latest FIFA World Cup clash. The 5-1 thrashing also took them to the top of Group F. Sweden, meanwhile, missed the chance to start a World Cup with two straight wins for the first time since 1958.
Ronald Koeman made a bold change by starting Brobbey instead of Crysencio Summerville, who had scored against Japan. That call paid off early, with Brobbey scoring twice inside the first 17 minutes.
The first goal came after Brobbey controlled a long ball and passed it to Tijjani Reijnders, who released Cody Gakpo on the left. Gakpo then sent in a low cross, which Brobbey finished from close range.
Sweden almost replied straight away, but Viktor Gyokeres was denied by a strong save from Bart Verbruggen at the near post. Soon after, Brobbey struck again to double the Netherlands lead, as Sweden’s goalkeeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt was left helpless due to defensive error.
The first-half drinks break helped Sweden settle down, and they looked better going forward after the restart. They managed to put the Dutch defence under pressure at times, but Yasin Ayari missed a couple of good chances.
Before half-time, Bart Verbruggen also made two good saves, stopping a free-kick from Gyokeres and a strong shot from Ayari.
However, any hope of a comeback faded quickly after the restart. Within two minutes, the Netherlands struck again using another low ball across the box. Denzel Dumfries sent a pass into a dangerous area, and even though Brobbey missed it, Cody Gakpo was there to tap it in.
Gakpo then got his second goal just seven minutes later. Crysencio Summerville broke through the middle and set him up on the left, and Gakpo’s powerful shot at the near post went past Nordfeldt before he could react.
Even after those goals, Graham Potter’s team kept fighting. Ayari tried his luck from distance and came close, before Sweden finally got a goal. Alexander Isak played Anthony Elanga through on goal, and the substitute stayed calm to finish past Verbruggen.
Netherlands then came up with the last laugh, as Summerville scored the fifth goal for the Dutch just before the stoppage time. As a result, Netherlands secured a dominating victory over Sweden, with Cody and Brobbey standing out as their best performers.
