Late Fightback Sees Japan Salvage Draw Against Netherlands
The Netherlands and Japan played out a 2-2 draw in their FIFA World Cup Group F opener, which also extended Japan’s unbeaten run to eight matches.
The Dutch are known for starting strong in big tournaments, but they came up against a Japan side that has troubled several top European teams in recent months.
Ronald Koeman’s team tried to take control early, with Donyell Malen getting on the end of a Cody Gakpo pass, but his effort was well saved by Zion Suzuki. Japan also created danger soon after, as Shogo Taniguchi drove forward on the left and set up Daizen Maeda, but Jan Paul van Hecke stepped in with a strong challenge to stop the chance.
Koeman’s team finally broke the deadlock in the 51st minute. After Reijnders’ free-kick was cleared, the ball reached Ryan Gravenberch, who sent in a perfect cross for Liverpool teammate Virgil van Dijk. He made no mistake and headed it in off the post.
But the lead didn’t last long. Nakamura picked up Takefusa Kubo’s pass, ran onto it, and fired a shot that took a deflection before going past Bart Verbruggen at the near post.
Soon afterwards, Crysencio Summerville scored a brilliant goal on his first major tournament appearance, curling a left-footed shot into the far corner.
Just when it looked like the Netherlands might still take all three points, Japan struck again in the 89th minute. Koki Ogawa met Junya Ito’s corner with a header that hit Daichi Kamada and ended up in the net past Verbruggen. This strike gave the Japanese a vital lead, making the Dutch fans completely stunned.
Due to this late equalizer, both Japan and the Netherlands settled for a 2-2 draw. The Dutch will now look to bounce back in their next match, as this one did not go as they had expected.
