Nathan Lyon registered his name in the record books after breaking Glenn McGrath’s test record. He claimed his 564th international wicket in test cricket during the third Ashes test against England. By doing so, he moved past McGrath on the list of Australian greats with the most wickets in test cricket. This is a remarkable achievement for Lyon, who is considered the backbone of Australia’s current test bowling attack.

Speaking about this major accomplishment at the post-day press conference, Nathan Lyon said that breaking McGrath’s test record means a lot to him. He grew up idolizing stars like Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath, so having his name among the Australian greats is the biggest highlight of his career.

“I grew up idolizing Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath, and these guys in my childhood were my heroes. And to think of being able to overtake Glenn … it’s pretty humbling to be honest with you, and it’s something that I’ll look back on at the end of my career, or even tonight,” said Nathan Lyon.

He then thanked his teammates, saying that achieving this huge record wouldn’t be possible if he didn’t have the support of the team. He feels proud to have such teammates around him, as their encouragement and collaboration have helped him maintain consistent performances in test cricket.

Acknowledging Team Support in Achieving Milestone

“I’ll sit back and try, and have a moment because it is an extremely special moment for myself. But I haven’t been able to do that without the guys at the other end, my teammates,” said Nathan Lyon.

The Australian off-spinner then explained that he has been with the team for a long time, which has allowed him to understand his role within the group and gain better clarity about everything. He feels fortunate to be part of a team that has achieved so much success in test cricket.

“I’ve been around this group long enough to understand my role inside, and it’s an amazing group to be a part of,” said Nathan Lyon.

He then showered further praise on the Australian team, saying it is a special group of talented players. He expressed gratitude for being part of the team, as their support has helped him achieve this milestone.

“I’ll continue to enjoy that while I can, it’s a pretty special group, and just extremely grateful for that opportunity, I guess. Same emotions as usual, nervous, but that’s me,” said Nathan Lyon.

Australia is currently dominating the Adelaide test by delivering a strong performance with the ball. They are confident to wrap up the England innings on the start of the third day cheaply, as the visitors are reeling at 213 for the loss of 8 wickets. It would be interesting to see how England will make a comeback in this test match, because Australia is currently looking well set to register another big victory in Adelaide.
