Nandre Burger was bowling in Raipur when he sustained a hamstring injury. The left-arm seamer of the South African team had to go off the field in the second ODI against India, and the injury could put him out of the rest of the season.
Burger struggled with his run-up in the seventh over and couldn’t land properly on his right leg. He clutched his knee and walked off the field, leaving the over to be completed by Aiden Markram.
Burger is currently undergoing evaluation; initial examination has revealed a right hamstring strain. The injury will affect South Africa's plans for the rest of the match and the third ODI scheduled for Saturday.
Burger was not part of the T20I squad, where Anrich Nortje is set to return. He may be called upon if South Africa requires more pace, particularly since the squad is already missing Kagiso Rabada (rib injury) and Gerald Coetzee (not selected for the tour).
Burger has a history of injuries, including a lower back stress fracture that kept him out of action from October 2024 to September this year. He missed last year’s SA20 but was re-signed by the Joburg Super Kings for this season’s edition at a value of R6.3 million. His fitness is crucial for the team, with the tournament set to begin on Boxing Day, in just over three weeks.
