South Africa is a team that fights till the very end of the match. It is one of their spirits that has given them victories in various crunch matches. Three years ago, when they lost to England Women by 6-0 (3 ODIs and 3 T20Is) in the away tour, their confidence was shattered. However, the same spirit drove the team forward, helping them secure a resounding six-run victory over England to reach their first-ever World Cup final.
Coming to this year’s ICC Women’s World Cup, South Africa came up with the same spirit in their hearts. They once again saw a comprehensive thrashing at the hands of England. They were bowled out for just 69 runs, making their tournament opener a complete disaster. However, getting such a big defeat still didn’t demoralize the South African camp. They showed confidence in their skills, stating that they are a much better team than the result against England suggested.
Based on that belief, the South African camp once again made a strong comeback in the tournament. Their next match against India at Visakhapatnam turned out to be a thriller, in which they ultimately came out as the winners. This victory looked sweet because the way in which South Africa won the game was nothing short of exemplary.
It was an exhibition of belief and grit, letting everyone know how a spirited heart always keeps on beating till the end of the fight. At the center of this victory was a player who is not talked about in international circles. It was Nadine de Klerk who produced a stunning knock for South Africa to down India at Visakhapatnam.
When asked about how she did the unthinkable against India, Nadine said that she kept things simple. The batter further explained that she played shots according to the merit of the ball. This allowed her to play risk-free cricket, as the wicket was good for batting.
"I think today it was just about not trying to overhit the ball. I think simplicity is everything. I think today was just about really backing myself and not trying to overhit it, and just timing the ball. It was quite a good wicket," said Nadine de Klerk after the India game.
In the match against India, South Africa were looking down and out during the chase in the second innings. When Nadine de Klerk joined Chloe Tryon in the middle, it was all about soaking up the pressure and building a partnership. The batter did exactly that by keeping in view the required rate that was still in reach at that time.
However, when Tryon got out, things became a bit difficult for South Africa. It was the moment when Nadine took everything on herself, knowing that she had to play a match-winning knock from here alone.
"Yeah, I think it obviously got a little bit more tricky when she [Tryon] got out, but I think even though her leg gave her a bit of problems, I think she's probably one of the best finishers in world cricket. We know she can clear any boundaries. I think when we were batting together, we were still pretty confident to chase the score. I guess it's just about the belief and the character at the end of the day, and we just wanted to stick it out and fight really hard because we knew how important this game was for our team," said Nadine de Klerk.
In the end, Nadine de Klerk hit the winning runs for South Africa, dashing the hopes of India at Visakhapatnam. This game showcased the grit of South Africa, as well as the attitude that keeps them thriving in the major events. Nadine de Klerk became the star of the night, letting everyone know how batting under pressure can be done effectively.
