MIRPUR: On Thursday, Bangladesh wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim made a remarkable achievement in his career when he scored a brilliant century in the 100th Test, and he did it in the second game of the home series with Ireland.
He began day two, starting the day on 99. He reached his century with a calm single in the second over 100. The 38-year-old threw his helmet, threw up his hands to the heavens, and fell to the ground in an ecstatic frenzy that shook the Sher-e-Bangla people.
With this milestone knock, he now joins an exclusive group of players who have celebrated their 100th Test with a century. The distinguished list includes Colin Cowdrey (104), Javed Miandad (145), Gordon Greenidge (149), Alec Stewart (105), Inzamam-ul-Haq (184), Ricky Ponting (120 & 143 not out), Graeme Smith (131), Hashim Amla (134), Joe Root (218), and David Warner (200).
This 13th Test century brought Mushfiqur's level to Mominul Haque for the most Test centuries in Bangladesh's history.
He was dismissed when left-arm spinner Matthew Humphreys bowled to him, and Andy Balbirnie took the catch at second slip (106). He walked off the field to applause from the Ireland players and the enthusiastic reception of the Mirpur crowd.
Mushfiqur shone through his 214-ball stay, striking five fours and helping Bangladesh recover from an early 95-3 flatter on day one.
The home series had already been marked by Bangladesh's victory in the first Test, which they won by an innings and 47 runs.
